Every December, as the first lights go up and the evenings get longer, I’m reminded why I love curating cozy moments — in my home, in my stories, and inside every ReaderCrate box.
My own holiday tradition started years ago, when my daughters were little. We went out in search of a “fake” tree to save on the pine-needle cleanup, and I told my daughter Maria she could pick any one she wanted.
Naturally, she marched straight toward the white tree.
I remember thinking, Really? The white one?
But we brought it home anyway, strung it with colorful lights, and something unexpected happened.
It became magical.
Every year, after the lights were plugged in, we’d lie on our backs beneath the branches and look up through the glowing colors. From that angle, the whole world softened — just light, warmth, and the three of us sharing a moment I didn’t yet realize would become a lifelong memory.
Now that my girls are grown and building traditions of their own, there’s a sweet ache when I pull out that white tree. A quiet missing, wrapped in gratitude for the years that went by too quickly.
Tonight was no different.
I plugged in the lights, left the decorations in their boxes for now, and just sat with it — letting the room fill with that gentle, familiar glow.
And right on cue, Isa curled up next to me. She always seems to know when I need company. There’s something about the way she presses close that feels like its own kind of comfort, its own quiet “I’m here.”
Next week, the whole house will look different. My granddaughters and grandson will burst through the door, the quiet will be replaced by joyful chaos, and the tree will shine under handmade ornaments, sticky fingers, and giggles that echo down the hall.
But tonight?
Tonight is the stillness before the sparkle.
Just me, Isa, and the soft glow of a tree filled with decades of memories. My husband is in the other room watching his beloved B-movies, and I’m here soaking in a peaceful moment before the beautiful mess of family arrives.
And moments like this remind me why ReaderCrate exists.
Because the world moves fast — too fast — unless we intentionally create spaces of warmth and wonder.
The cozy items I choose each month, the stories I select, the feeling I hope each box brings… it all comes from this place. The place where quiet magic lives.
Life is beautiful — in the loud, in the soft, and in all the glowing moments in between.
And I hope each ReaderCrate box adds a little bit of that magic to your world, too.
