Do you believe in ghosts?
Itâs a simple questionâbut one that instantly sparks curiosity. And for our latest ReaderCrate Book Club author interview, it felt like the perfect place to begin.
Watch the replay here.Â
Because this monthâs featured author doesnât just write paranormal cozy mysteriesâŚ
Sheâs actually lived them.
As part of our March ReaderCrate theme, Grounds for Suspicion, we had the absolute pleasure of sitting down with Beverly A. Rearick, author of Up in Fangsâa delightfully twisty paranormal cozy mystery filled with secrets, magic, and just the right amount of bite.
If youâre new hereâhi! Iâm Alyssa Granlund (also writing as Lyssa Lund), founder of ReaderCrate. Every month, we curate a cozy mystery experience filled with books, themed goodies, and a whole lot of reader joy.
And one of my favorite things?
Introducing you to amazing authors like Beverly.
Beverlyâs fascination with the paranormal started earlyâso early, in fact, that she canât remember a time when it wasnât part of her life.
But what really surprised us?
She didnât stop at curiosity.
She joined a paranormal investigation group, took classes, attended conferences, and explored everything from:
Historic buildings
Hotels
Theaters
Private homes
Using tools like EMF detectors, audio recordings, and video equipment, she and her team searched for evidence of the unexplained.
And yes⌠sheâs had experiences.
One of the most chilling?
Seeing a figure in an old-fashioned dress walk past her in a buildingâwhen she was supposed to be completely alone.
Surprisingly, Beverly says most of her experiences were more fascinating than frightening.
But there was one moment that stood out.
While investigating an old building, she and a fellow investigator suddenly felt an overwhelming sense of uneaseâand quickly left the area.
Later, when reviewing their recordingsâŚ
They heard what sounded like a voice telling them:
đ âGet out.â
(Okay, I donât know about youâbut that gave me chills.)
While Beverly doesnât directly copy her real-life experiences into her books, they absolutely shape the feeling of her stories.
That sense of curiosity.
That edge of the unknown.
That question of what ifâŚ
It all shows up in her writing.
One of the most fun details about Beverlyâs books?
Thereâs almost always a bat somewhere in the story.
And not just any bat.
Her character Groverâa snarky, gossip-loving bat with a personality all his ownâhas become a reader favorite.
(And honestly? We love him.)
Featured in our March ReaderCrate, Up in Fangs introduces us to:
đ§âď¸ Griselle Wells â a vampire who can communicate with ghosts
đľď¸âď¸ A paranormal artifact retrieval team
đ Mysteries that span beyond just one small town
Itâs a fresh twist on the cozy mystery genreâblending traditional sleuthing with magical elements and paranormal intrigue.
Beverly is a full-time writer, but her creative process might surprise you.
Instead of early mornings, she does her best work in the evening hours, when creativity flows most naturally.
Sheâs also a dedicated plotterâmapping out her stories in detail before writingâthough her characters still occasionally take the story in unexpected directions (donât they always?).
As Beverly shared, readers today are drawn to stories that offer:
⨠A touch of magic
⨠A sense of escape
⨠A satisfying mystery
⨠And often⌠a happily-ever-after
Paranormal cozy mysteries deliver all of thatâwith just a little extra sparkle.
